Nira
What is Nira ?
Nira is a low-level programming and Linux, non-profit community made by self-learners to help others who are in the same boat.
Nira was originally built by a group of Tamil people who wanted to create a place to learn and discuss programming together. But the community is not limited to Tamil people at all. Everyone is welcome here, regardless of where you are from. We mostly speak and discuss things in English, so English is the main language we use in the community.
We are not an NGO, a specialized professional community, or some "Learning C in 100 days" bootcamp community. Not at all. We are ourselves learners, so we are not a big community that does several seminars and weekly meetups. Nope. Even though we may have plans for things like that in the future, that is not what Nira is mainly about.
Our community is mainly built around learning and discussing topics related to low-level programming. The reason for this is pretty simple: low-level programming is a difficult field, and there are only a small number of communities that are really dedicated to it. We want to keep this space for people who are genuinely interested in learning and understanding how things work at a lower level.
Even though we are niche because of our focus on low-level programming, the things we discuss are actually pretty broad. We cover programming languages such as:
- C
- C++
- Rust
- Zig
- Odin
Beyond programming languages, we also discuss electronics, computer systems, computer philosophy, data structures and algorithms, performance and optimizations techniques, simulations, physics, maths and other deep technical things. If we want to be more specific, some of the topics we cover include:
- Embedded systems
- FPGA
- Compilers
- Operating systems
- GPGPU and parellel computing
- Graphics programming
- Game engine development
- Network systems
- Cybersecurity
We also talk about Linux and pretty much everything around it, including:
- Linux distros
- Desktop environments and window managers
- Linux ricing and customization
- Linux tools
- FOSS and open-source software
- Self-hosting
- Linux-related workflows and experiments
The main idea is that we don't want to limit ourselves to one specific language or one specific field. Low-level programming is our main focus, but there are many things connected to it, and we want people to be able to explore those things as they learn.
Everyone here is at a different stage of learning. Some may just be starting with programming, while others may already be going deeper into things like C, operating systems, compilers, embedded systems, Linux, or other areas. There is no specific level you need to be at to be part of the community. You can be a complete beginner or someone already working on advanced topics, as long as you have the interest to learn and understand things.
So, we are all basically in the same boat. Some people may know more about one topic while being completely new to another, and that's completely fine. Nira is just a place where we can learn, experiment, explore different areas, share what we find, and help each other along the way.
Before being part of our community, check out our policies to know more about the guidelines and what we expect from you guys. This helps us all understand how the community works, so we can improve together and make Nira a better community for everyone.
How Nira Works ?
Nira works as a decentralized authority, where the main idea is that the power and management of Nira are shared across the community instead of being controlled by only a small group of people. As a community, we thought this would be a better way to build a healthy and active community where people can actually contribute and have a role in how things are managed.
The main pillars behind Nira are the contributors. Contributors are people who continuously contribute to the projects we are working on, support the community, engage with other community members, and help move things forward.
The contributions you make within Nira can stack over time. As you continue contributing and becoming more involved, you may eventually have the chance to become part of Nira's management and take responsibility for different parts of the community and its projects.
There are already some community projects ongoing, and you can join our Discord through the social links below to find out more and see what you can contribute to.
We have not yet properly set up the full contributing guidelines and how the contributor system will work in detail. We are still working on it, and we will publish proper guidelines soon.
